However, the hole components can slightly bend the wires though you may get it at a lower cost. Though you can solder the SMD LED, it wouldn’t provide flexibility to the board. 

You can also place the SMD LED behind the screen to place a cheaper LED that would utilize the bulb for sticking it through the package. 

Hence, you can also place the SMD LED behind a small screen in your packaging for a cleaner device.

The PCBs also contain the LEDs fabricated with multilayer FR-4 substrates. Hence, you need to select the pattern with the required components that can transmit heat to acquire the power and ground layers.

The surfaced-mounted LED with a small footprint uses up the vias, which might turn as a weak solder or even rigid as it would not fill the plate on vias which can hamper their functionality. 

The plain usage of SMD LED would be ideal on an LED lighting array that deals with wicking issues. 

Even if you use a single but powerful LED, it will not damage your board because of your thermal use.

However, if you use the system of lightning applications, your board could face trouble from the massive heat that supports your LEDs which would take a long time to cool down. 

Hence, the Aluminum PCB LED is the most preferred solution for all LED heating issues.
